ESPA WELCOMES CREATION OF MINISTRY OF WATER RESOURCES AND SANITATION

The Environmental Services Providers Association (ESPA) welcomes the creation of the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation.

Indeed, this is the first time such a dedicated Ministry has been created and giving the challenges that the country faces in the sector, it is in the right direction.

The queue we at ESPA have picked is that the government is committed to prioritize waste management to ensure the health and wellbeing of the people of Ghana, and we commend it highly.

We wish therefore, to pledge our support to the incoming Minister, and to avail our expertise, and capacity to see to the success of the new ministry.

ESPA is an association of private waste management companies, and its members in collaboration with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) work to ensure cleanliness for the country.

We also want to draw the attention of the new government to the myriad of challenges affecting the efficient delivery of sanitation services in the country. Although significant strides have been made by the successive governments to support the sector, a lot more remains to be done to ensure that waste management companies thrive to deliver efficient services to keep our towns and cities clean.

Among our most pressing issues which need to be addressed as a matter of urgency are the following.

  1. A waiver on the importation of sanitation equipment.
  2. Allocation of funds to adequately support infrastructure development in the sector, particularly, landfills and transfer stations.
  3. Payment of subsidies by government for municipal waste collection in low income areas.

While trusting that the new government will sufficiently support our efforts, we pledge our preparedness to work with government and its relevant agencies to ensure that this great nation charts a continuing path of growth in an environment of cleanliness, good health and prosperity.
