The African Clean-up Award for Excellence is powered by the AFRICAN CLEAN UP INITIATIVE. Over the weekend in the Central Regional capital of the Central Region (Cape Coast) Ama Ofori Antwi won the Africa Clean Up Initiative Award of the year 2017.
Brief Profile of Ama Ofori-Antwi
Ama Ofori-Antwi is the Executive Secretary of the Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA), the umbrella body of private waste management companies in Ghana.
She has a Master of Philosophy –M.Phil. from the University of Ghana, Legon with over a decade experience in Ghana’s social work environment.
She made a brave move from social work into the country’s environmental sanitation sector when she accepted the position of the Executive Secretary of the ESPA in 2013.
She was instrumental in rebranding the association three years ago, which was necessary to drive a new waste management association committed to the efficient and effective delivery of sanitation services.
ESPA works as an advocacy body to lobby government, and influence policies required to improve Ghana’s environmental sanitation sector which is fraught with inefficiencies
She has also engaged a number of local and international organisations- NUFIC from the Netherlands and the BUSAC Fund to embark on capacity building training programme for staff of ESPA and its members; and engagement with district assemblies respectively.
Currently, Ghana’s waste management sector is private sector driven which makes ESPA a strong force in the waste management sector chain.
Ms Ofori-Antwi is dedicated to her work with a strong commitment to see a cleaner Ghana and a healthy people.
