ESPA Organise debate to mark World Toilet Day

The Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA) has urged the management of schools to prioritize sanitation. The Finance and Resource Mobilization Officer of ESPA, Mr. Nicholas Ross, said one of the ways to empower the younger generation to take sanitation seriously was to give them the necessary training in their early stages.

He was speaking at a debate organized by the association for the La Bawaleshie Presbyterian Basic Cluster of Schools in Accra on Friday, November 17, 2017, to mark World Toilet Day. The debate, which was organized for students in the Junior High Schools (JHS) was on the topic ‘’it is solely the government’s responsibility to provide sanitation as opposed to the people’s’’.

World Toilet Day is a day set aside by the United Nations (UN) to raise awareness of toilets and the importance of sanitation in today’s world. This year’s World Toilet Day was on the theme, ‘’Wastewater’’. By 2030, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 6, aim to reach everyone with sanitation and halve the proportion of untreated wastewater and increase recycling and safe reuse. It is estimated that poor water and sanitation cost developing countries around $260 billion a year.

Education

After the debate, officials from ESPA and Zoomlion Domestic Service educated the pupils about the need to observe good sanitation practices daily. Students who excelled in the debate were awarded science textbooks, exercise books, and other stationeries and their schools were presented with waste management equipment, including litter bins. In order to deal; with the issue of sanitation, Mr.

Ross said Ghanaians ought to assist the government and other stakeholders to see through their programs.

Receiving the items on behalf of the schools, the Assistant Headmaster of La Bawaleshie Presbyterian Basic School, Mr. Ebenezer Osafo, thanked ESPA and gave an assurance that the school would focus more on the area of sanitation.
