ESPA lobbied for reduction of Dumping fee at Zoompak for Informal Tricycle Operators

The ESPA Secretariat has helped negotiate for a reduction in the dumping fees charged at the Zoompak facility following ongoing discussions between Executives of Informal Borla Taxi and Tricycle members and management of Zoompak.

The reduction was agreed in a meeting held on 25th July 2019 at the Zoompak Office in Accra.

As deliberated in an earlier meeting engagement, the Management of Zoompak have finally considered revising the current rate at GH¢42 to GH¢38 to make the facility economically accessible. The increment was a result of high VAT charges coupled with other increasing overhead costs at the facility. Nonetheless, through the intervention of ESPA, management has notified that the reduction was triggered by increasing patronage of illegal dumpsites by some informal tricycle and Borla taxi operators. Owing to this, management has requested Executive of Informal Service providers to motivate their members to desist from patronizing illegal dumpsites. An appeal was therefore made to increase patronage to the facility.

ESPA strongly believe that services of mini transfer stations like Zoompak save informal service providers from commuting a long distance to landfills like Kpone and serves as a suitable alternative to illegal dumping sites. In this vein, ESPA entreat the government to reconsider levying VAT charges on Mini Transfer stations like Zoompak.
