ESPA SECRETARIAT VISITS ZOOMPAK TRANSFER STATION TO ASSESS PATRONAGE AFTER REDUCTION IN TIPPING FEES

With reference to our newsletter dated July, 31st 2019 titled “ESPA lobbied for the reduction of tipping fees at Achimota Zoompak transfer station

for Informal Tricycle operators”, the Field officer of ESPA Secretariat undertook a monitoring of the facility on the 28th August, 2019 to assess the level of informal members’ participation and patronage at the facility after the reduction in tipping fees of the facility.

It was evident that, patronage was relatively low. Some reasons provided includes: the high patronage of illegal dump sites by most informal members, and poor communication strategy by facility management to engage the leadership of the informal association to disseminate the reduction in tipping fees  to patrons.

ESPA with support from government agencies such as the relevant Metropolitan Municipal and District Assemblies coupled with Ghana police will need to increase its advocacy engagement against illegal dumping while intensify law enforcement actions toward the total closure of illegal dump sites. Further, a passionate appeal is requested by government through the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources to subsidize the management fees of transfer stations such as Achimota Zoompak to help such facilities to recover their operations cost
