The Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA) has expressed its readiness to operate 24-hour waste management services if the government provides the necessary support.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, ESPA’s Executive Secretary, Ama Ofori Antwi, emphasized that sanitation remains a major challenge in Ghana.

She noted that with government backing, waste management companies could employ more staff, extend operations to night shifts, and create job opportunities for the youth.

“If the government can support us, we will work at night and employ more task force members. This will not only improve sanitation but also create more jobs for young people,” she stated.

She also highlighted advancements in waste management, including transforming human waste into charcoal, which she believes will help reduce deforestation.

“This innovation is beneficial because people will no longer cut down trees for charcoal production,” she added.

However, Antwi revealed that the waste management sector is struggling, with the number of companies dropping from 70 to just 40 due to financial difficulties.

“Many waste management companies are operating at a loss, leading to their collapse. People assume waste management is a profitable business, but when they start, they realize the challenges and rethink their decision,” she explained.

She urged the government to invest in the sector to ensure sustainable waste management and improved sanitation across the country.

Executive Secretary of Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA), Ama Ofori Antwi, has cast doubt on the efficiency of the National Sanitation Day exercise.

Madam Antwi has said the monthly cleanup exercise cannot solve the sanitation issues the nation is confronted with.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, she noted that the exercise can only raise awareness and not necessarily rid the country of filth.

“I have been in the sanitation sector for 12 years, and to be sincere, the sanitation day cannot address our sanitation problems, but it only creates awareness among citizens,’’ she said.

Madam Antwi added that the exercise is not sustainable; hence, there must be a review with special attention to crowded areas, which tend to have genuine sanitation concerns.

Executive Secretary of the Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA), Mrs. Ama Ofori Antwi has called on all environmental service providers including waste management companies to subscribe to ESPA for their own wellbeing.
She said there is power in unity and together they can be a stronger advocacy group.

She lamented about the lackadaisical attitude shown by some of their members in the regions to join and disclosed that there are several benefits that will accrue to members which is the more reason why the individual organisations or members should join ESPA which is currently working in collaboration with the Coalition of Non-Governmental Organisations in the Water and Sanitation Sectors (CONIWAS) to ensuring that the WASH sector is fully regulated and recognised.

The UNDP with funding support from the Coca Cola foundation organized a 3-day (21st -23rd July) INtegrated Waste Management Fair (IWMF) at the Accra Conference Center. The fair targeted relevant government partners including development partners, private sector, academia, media and other relevant institutions which provided the opportunity to connect with different strands of work on waste management as well as different stakeholders.
ESPA was present at the fair, with some other members from the association.
