Sanitation Levy, the game changer for making Ghana a cleaner country?

The Environmental Services Providers Association (ESPA), has welcomed the proposed 10 pesewas Sanitation and Pollution Levy (SPL) announced by the government in this year’s Budget Statement and Economic Policy.
The SPL now awaiting parliamentary debate and approval is 10 pesewas on the price per litre of petrol/diesel under the Energy Sector Levies Act (ESLA).
Member of Parliament for Suame Constituency, and Leader of Government Business, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu announced the new policy when he delivered this year’s National budget to parliament on behalf of the Finance and Economic Planning Minister Designate, Mr Ken Ofori Atta, who is currently out of the country.
The Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA), with support from the UNDP, has presented Personal Protective Clothing (PPEs) to its informal sector members, who operate tricycles to collect solid waste in communities where waste compaction trucks cannot access.
Members of ESPA on 28th September 2020 supported Zoomlion Ghana limited to commission 95M Composting and Recycling plant at Adagya in the Bosomtwe district in the Ashanti region. The 95M project has the capacity of receiving 2400 tonnes of solid waste daily which is above the daily generation of 1200 tonnes of waste within the Kumasi metropolis .
The Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA) has supported the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources to undertake a clean-up exercise as part of the 2020 Civil Service week-long celebration in Accra.
The clean-up was undertaken around the Ministerial enclave and its environs on 24th September 2020.
A one-day training Programme has been organised for informal waste collectors with the Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA) in Accra, as part of efforts to build their capacity on effective waste collection in the wake of the covid-19 pandemic.
